George Karlaftis Inks $93M Extension with Chiefs, Cementing His Place in Team’s Defensive Future

The Kansas City Chiefs are locking in their defensive future. Star pass rusher George Karlaftis has signed a four-year, $93 million contract extension, including $62 million guaranteed, keeping him in red and gold through the 2030 season.

At just 24, Karlaftis has already proven himself as a cornerstone of Steve Spagnuolo’s defense. With 24.5 sacks in three seasons and a relentless motor that thrives next to All-Pro tackle Chris Jones, his extension signals a long-term vision for defensive dominance. In 2023, Karlaftis led the team with eight sacks and elevated his game in the postseason with four more.

“George is the type of guy you build around,” said head coach Andy Reid. “Reliable, relentless — and he makes us better every down.”

The deal, averaging $23.25 million per year, is team-friendly relative to the top market deals, giving GM Brett Veach flexibility to build around his core. Karlaftis is the first from the 2022 draft class — which includes Isiah Pacheco and Trent McDuffie — to land an extension.

With Trey Smith recently signed and McDuffie negotiations ongoing, the Chiefs are focused on continuity. As Kansas City aims for a third straight Super Bowl, locking down its young talent is the next step in sustaining its dynasty.
