In blistering North Carolina heat, Benfica secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Bayern Munich to claim top spot in Group C at the expanded Club World Cup.
Temperatures soared to 36°C at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium, making for challenging conditions as both European giants struggled to find their rhythm. Despite the heat, Benfica made an early breakthrough, with Andreas Schjelderup calmly slotting home from 15 yards after excellent work from Fredrik Aursnes in the 13th minute.
The Portuguese side defended their lead with resilience, as Bayern, already through to the knockout stage, struggled to break them down. Manager Vincent Kompany rang the changes at halftime, introducing Harry Kane, Michael Olise, and Joshua Kimmich to spark a comeback.
Kimmich briefly thought he had drawn Bayern level with a crisp 25-yard strike, but the goal was chalked off for offside, with Kane deemed to be obstructing Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin’s view.
Bayern dominated the second half, but Benfica’s defense held firm. Aleksandar Pavlovic was denied by Trubin, while Leroy Sane missed two late chances to equalise.
Benfica now face Chelsea in the round of 16, while Bayern settle for second in the group.
