With a thin 2025 NHL free agent class and a rising salary cap, teams are bracing for another summer of overspending. The Toronto Maple Leafs sit at a critical crossroads, with Mitch Marner’s contract set to expire and questions swirling about his future. While undeniably talented, Marner’s rumored $14 million asking price is steep—especially considering his playoff track record.
The Leafs face a pivotal choice: overpay for individual brilliance or redistribute their cap space to build a more balanced, competitive lineup. With John Tavares likely to re-sign at a modest $5 million AAV and restricted free agent Matthew Knies a candidate for a long-term extension, Toronto could lock in two key contributors for less than Marner’s projected cost.
Meanwhile, depth forwards like Calle Jarnkrok, David Kampf, and Max Domi may be moved to free up space for more efficient additions like Matt Duchene or Pius Suter. Even with interest in Florida’s Sam Bennett, Toronto must be wary of overpaying for grit over proven value.
To win in today’s NHL, depth and cap flexibility matter as much as star power. The Leafs have the tools—but only if they embrace change and let go of sentimentality.
