Sheryl Crow Speaks Out: Fighting for Her Kids, Her State, and the Planet

Sheryl Crow isn’t afraid to raise her voice—even when it puts her in the crosshairs. In a new Variety cover story for their Power of Women Nashville issue, the Grammy-winning singer opened up about the emotional and political tightrope she walks living in Tennessee, a state she calls both home and a source of deep frustration.

“Tennessee is a hard place for me,” said Crow, who moved to Nashville in 2007. “I call my representatives every single morning—Andy Ogles and Marsha Blackburn hear from me daily.”

Her activism isn’t new. From criticizing gun sales in her 1996 song “Love Is a Good Thing” to advocating for climate justice, Crow’s message has always been clear: protect the future, especially for children. Her recent sale of her Tesla—paired with a jab at Elon Musk—reignited online discourse, but this time, it felt more dangerous. One man even trespassed on her property, armed.

Despite the risks, Crow remains committed. She’ll be honored at Variety’s Power of Women Nashville event for her environmental work, supporting the Natural Resources Defense Council. “We need to leave the campground nicer than we found it,” she said. “That’s how I was raised—and it’s what I’m fighting for.”
