Mark O’Connell, drummer for the iconic emo band Taking Back Sunday, has announced his departure after nearly 25 years with the group. The 43-year-old musician shared the news on Instagram on Jan. 7, reflecting on his time with the band and his plans for the future.
A Heartfelt Goodbye
“After nearly 25 years as the drummer of Taking Back Sunday, I want to confirm that I am no longer with the band,” O’Connell wrote in a note to fans. He expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of the band’s followers, calling them “the heartbeat of TBS” and a cornerstone of his life over the past two decades.
Reasons Behind the Departure
O’Connell explained that his decision to leave wasn’t entirely his own. In recent years, he has focused on family, personal growth, and sobriety—priorities that sometimes clashed with his life in the band.
“Unfortunately, during this time, I didn’t always feel the support I needed from those I thought of as brothers, and creative differences made it hard to move forward together,” he shared.
A New Chapter
Despite the challenges, O’Connell is looking ahead with optimism. He revealed plans to release new music both as a solo artist and in collaboration with old friends.
“I’ve poured my heart into this project, and I can’t wait to share it with you,” he wrote. “This is a new chapter for me—one of passion, creativity, and hope.”
Reflections on the Journey
Taking Back Sunday, formed in 2001, has been a major force in the emo and alternative rock scene, with O’Connell contributing significantly to the band’s sound and success.
The band’s current lineup now includes three original members: lead vocalist Adam Lazzara, guitarist/vocalist John Nolan, and bassist Shaun Cooper. Eddie Reyes, who left the band in 2018, hinted at O’Connell’s departure during a podcast in November, further solidifying the rumors.
O’Connell ended his statement by expressing gratitude for the memories, opportunities, and connections he’s made over the years. “I’m choosing to focus on the good as I move into this next chapter,” he concluded.
