Hollywood heavyweight Jason Momoa has officially traded his trident for a space bike, stepping into the role of anti-hero Lobo in DC’s upcoming blockbuster, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
The casting marks Momoa’s return to the DC Universe, albeit in a radically different persona from his aquatic alter-ego, Aquaman. The actor confirmed the news via Instagram, sharing his excitement for a character he’s long admired.
“Lobo was always my favourite… it’s the perfect role,” Momoa wrote, echoing comments from a prior interview where he called the part a dream role.
A Bold New Direction for DC Films
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is set to be the second installment in the revamped DC Universe led by James Gunn and Peter Safran, following Superman. The film stars Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) as the titular heroine and is directed by Craig Gillespie (Cruella).
The screenplay, penned by Ana Nogueira, adapts the acclaimed comic series by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. The narrative centers on Supergirl, a more jaded and hardened character than her cousin Superman, as she battles planet-destroying aliens.
Who Is Lobo?
Created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen, Lobo is a foul-mouthed, cigar-smoking bounty hunter from the utopian planet Czarnia. Known for his violent tendencies, irreverence, and near-indestructibility, Lobo has become a cult favorite in the DC comic world.
Momoa’s casting aligns perfectly with the character’s over-the-top charisma, ruggedness, and humor—qualities fans have long associated with the actor.
What’s Next?
Production begins next month, with the film slated for release on June 26, 2026. Alongside Alcock and Momoa, the cast features Matthias Schoenaerts as the villainous Krem and Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll.
James Gunn teased that Supergirl’s story will diverge from the traditional hopeful tone, emphasizing her survivalist upbringing on a shattered fragment of Krypton.
“Superman was raised by loving parents on Earth, but Supergirl watched her entire world perish,” Gunn explained on X (formerly Twitter).
With Momoa bringing his trademark intensity to Lobo and Alcock leading the charge as Supergirl, DC fans are in for a gritty, action-packed ride through the cosmos.
