2024: A Monumental Year for Metal Music

As 2024 draws to a close, fans of metal have plenty to celebrate after a year filled with groundbreaking albums, unforgettable performances, and unexpected comebacks. From legendary bands to rising stars, the past 12 months showcased the genre’s power and innovation like never before.

A Year to Remember
This year delivered some of the most memorable moments in metal history, with iconic bands and emerging talent pushing creative boundaries and elevating the genre to new heights. Major milestones were achieved, and the community was treated to surprises that no one could have predicted.

Gojira’s Historic Paris Olympics Performance
One of the year’s most striking events was Gojira’s performance at the Paris Olympic Games Opening Ceremony. The French metal band played atop a former prison, accompanied by an orchestra and an opera singer, marking a historic moment for metal on the world stage.

“For three minutes, Paris was vibrating with our sound,” said frontman Joe Duplantier. “We’ve never blasted across a whole city before. That alone was incredible.”

The performance showcased not just the band’s artistry but also the growing recognition of metal as a powerful cultural force.

Ghost’s Cinematic Debut
Ghost made waves this year with the release of their first feature film, Rite Here Rite Now. The cinematic venture was a bold step for the theatrical band, combining their signature storytelling with a completely new medium.

Tobias Forge, the band’s mastermind, reflected on the experience: “After doing this film, I really got a blooded tooth, as we say here in Sweden. It would be amazing to act again.” Fans of Forge’s theatrical performances might just see him dive deeper into acting in the future.

Honoring Legends and Looking Ahead
This year also marked the 40th anniversary of Iron Maiden’s legendary album Powerslave, celebrated with special memorabilia and tributes from fans worldwide. Meanwhile, bands like Nightwish, Slipknot, Bad Omens, and Sleep Token continued to dominate the scene with stellar releases and sold-out tours.

The metal community has had a lot to reflect on this year, and it’s clear that the genre continues to thrive and evolve. With iconic performances, ambitious creative projects, and a lineup of exciting releases, 2024 proved that metal remains as dynamic and powerful as ever.

Here’s to an even louder 2025.
