Baseball fans and industry insiders alike are on edge as Juan Soto’s much-anticipated free agency approaches its final stages. According to sources familiar with the process, the 26-year-old superstar outfielder could decide his future destination as early as this week, potentially before the annual winter meetings begin in Dallas on Sunday.
Soto’s agent, Scott Boras, has not committed to a specific timeline but confirmed that the selection process is progressing. “We’ve had meetings with a number of franchises. He’s begun the process of eliminating teams,” Boras said during Blake Snell’s introductory news conference at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday. “Juan is a very methodical thinker, so we’ll see. I don’t think anything is imminent in the near future.”
Five Teams in the Running
Soto’s market includes some of baseball’s biggest players: the New York Yankees, New York Mets, Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, and Los Angeles Dodgers. All five teams are vying for the generational talent, who is widely expected to sign a deal exceeding $600 million.
Such a contract would place Soto’s agreement among the most lucrative in MLB history. Last offseason, Shohei Ohtani inked a 10-year, $700 million deal with the Dodgers, although deferred payments reduced its present-day value to $460 million for luxury tax purposes. Soto’s deal could surpass even that benchmark, both in total value and structure.
A Rapidly Moving Market
The pace of Soto’s free agency reflects a broader shift in how MLB teams are approaching the offseason. Unlike previous years, where top free agents lingered unsigned into spring training, this winter has seen swifter action. Boras himself has already secured contracts for several clients, including Blake Snell, Yusei Kikuchi, and Frankie Montas.
Asked about the faster-moving market, Boras speculated that increased financial stability in media and streaming revenue may be contributing. “Platforms working the way they should, and the streaming thing that they have going on, is very viable, very profitable,” he said. “And also, who’s in the market has a lot to do with things too. You have major-market franchises, you have generational talent.”
Soto’s Legacy and the Stakes
At just 26, Soto has already solidified his place as one of baseball’s greatest hitters. A deal of this magnitude would reflect not only his immense talent but also the significant impact he could have on any franchise he joins.
With teams narrowing their pitches and Soto weighing his options, a decision could shape the future of baseball’s competitive landscape for the next decade and beyond. All eyes will be on Dallas this weekend to see if the announcement coincides with the winter meetings, signaling the culmination of one of the most high-profile free agency pursuits in MLB history.
