Despite winning his first Golden Globe for Succession, Kieran Culkin recently revealed that he still hasn’t watched the series finale of the HBO hit. The actor, who portrayed the fan-favorite Roman Roy, shared his story on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, explaining how a mix of logistical challenges and timing kept him from seeing the episode.
Abroad and Out of Luck
Culkin was in Poland filming A Real Pain with Jesse Eisenberg when the final three episodes of Succession aired. Unable to access his Max account overseas, he faced the unusual problem of being a lead actor unable to watch his own show. “My wife actually went on Instagram and said, ‘Hey, if anyone can give your sign-in so Kieran can watch the last couple episodes?’” Culkin recounted. Fans and followers generously shared their credentials, allowing him to catch up on episodes eight and nine.
However, he wasn’t as lucky with the finale. After moving to a new hotel without a smart TV, Culkin found himself unable to watch it, and the moment slipped away. “Then I went home, did a vacation, blah blah blah. You know when it’s like a couple months old? I kinda missed the moment,” he told Colbert.
Knowing the Ending Without Watching It
Although Culkin missed the viewing experience, he insists he knows what happens. “I mean, I was there. I read it, I was there for it, I know what happens — at least I think,” he joked. The finale earned rave reviews and intense fan reactions, leaving Culkin aware of the episode’s impact, even if he hasn’t seen it himself.
Succession Success and Awards Glory
For his portrayal of Roman Roy, Culkin earned a Golden Globe and an Emmy nomination, gaining critical acclaim for his mix of humor, vulnerability, and chaos on the Jesse Armstrong-created series. As Succession closed out its four-season run, Roman’s journey became one of the most talked-about story arcs, cementing Culkin’s place in television history.
While Succession fans might be surprised that Culkin hasn’t watched the show’s end, he’s still feeling the rewards of his work. For now, the Golden Globe-winning actor seems content to know the story, even if he’s missed the final cut.
