Microsoft Releases Subscription-Free Office 2024 for Mac, Windows

As of October 1, Microsoft’s Office 2024 is now available for a one-time purchase on Mac and Windows.

Office 2024 includes the usual Microsoft apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote) and costs $149.99 for one PC or Mac. For another $100, you can get Office Home & Business 2024, which includes Outlook and the option to use the apps for commercial purposes.

As PCMag reports, the one-time license is an alternative for those who don’t want to pay $69.99 annually for Microsoft 365. “We know some of our customers still prefer a non-subscription way to access our familiar apps, which is why we’re releasing Office 2024,” Microsoft says.

Office 2024 packs all the modern features Microsoft has added to its popular apps in the past few years, but that’s about it. The suite comes “locked in” and won’t receive any further upgrades. Users will also miss out on real-time collaboration and Copilot AI integration, which are available with Microsoft 365, Ars Technica notes.

In PCMag’review of Microsoft 365, they found that it’s the “best set of productivity apps for serious office work, seamlessly blending the power, speed, and security of desktop-based apps with the convenience of online and mobile platforms.” It earned an Outstanding rating and PCMag’s Editors’ Choice award.

Office 2024 is available from retailers worldwide or the Microsoft website. It’s compatible with PCs that run Windows 10/11 or Macs running macOS Ventura, Sonoma, or Sequoia.
