iPhone Users: Time to Update to iOS 18.0.1

Apple released iOS 18.0.1 for iPhone users on October 3, fixing a few notable bugs and security issues. If you haven’t yet updated, it’s important to do so, and soon. While the update is small and doesn’t include any new features, the fixes are important quality-of-life improvements for users that also aim to resolve some frustrating glitches.

As PCMag reports, Apple’s iOS 18.0.1 promises to fix a touch-screen issue with iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro devices, where the screen would stop responding. It’s also fixing an issue with iPhone 16 Pro devices where the Camera app would freeze when HDR is off and the user is recording video in macro mode on the Ultra Wide camera in 4K.

The update also fixes a few bugs in the Messages app, including when the app might suddenly close itself when replying to messages that shared an Apple Watch face. And, it fixes an iPhone 16 audio message bug, where the recording icon in Messages might not pop up until the recording has already started for a few seconds. The update aims to address a memory allocation issue on some iPhones, as well.

For iPad users, Apple has also released the iPadOS 18.0.1. The new respective software updates fix a concerning password bug that can occur on most iPhones (XS and newer) as well as numerous iPad, iPad mini, and iPad Pro models, where VoiceOver might read your passwords out loud. The iPad update also restores access for M4 iPad Pros; Apple previously pulled the iPadOS 18 update for the M4 iPads after it bricked some of the tablets.

But wait, there’s more! Apple also rolled out an update for its Apple Vision Pro headset with visionOS 2.0.1. This update fixes a few bugs with the device’s software, namely, where YouTube’s site might freeze Safari, Messages might crash, or Web Extension data might be lost with visionOS 2.

Apple’s next major – and highly anticipated – update, iOS 18.1, includes Apple Intelligence, the tech giant’s generative AI suite of features. Initially expected to launch with iOS 18, Apple Intelligence is now available in 18.1’s public beta.
