50 Cent Talks Shifting Focus from Music to Film: ‘I’d Have to Tap Into My Stupid to Compete in Hip-Hop Today

In a candid interview with Earn Your Leisure, 50 Cent shared his thoughts on today’s hip-hop music, revealing the mindset he’d need to adopt to stay competitive in the current scene.

“If you listen to the music that’s out right now, I have to tap into my stupid,” the 49-year-old rapper said, reflecting on the direction of modern hip-hop. “I have to tap into the stupid side of me to write the right thing when it comes time to write the music.”

50 explained that his focus has shifted from music to film and TV production, believing he can have a more profound impact through that medium. “This is why I haven’t created as much content musically as I used to,” he added, emphasizing his growing dedication to film projects.

His last album, Animal Ambition, was released in 2014, but the rapper-turned-mogul has kept busy in Hollywood. Recently, Netflix acquired a docuseries he’s co-producing, addressing allegations against Sean “Diddy” Combs.

In a 2022 interview, 50 reflected on aging in a genre rooted in youth culture. “I don’t think you’re supposed to have the hottest verse at 50 years old in hip-hop,” he said, acknowledging the importance of new, young voices in the genre.
