Lizzo Embraces a “New Me,” thanks to Diet Changes, Exercise, and Body Neutrality… NOT Ozempic

Lizzo is showing off her progress. In an Instagram post, the singer, 36, reflected on her health journey.

As Women’s Health reports, in the “before” video, she showed off her body in a set of black Yitty underwear; meanwhile, in the “after” clip, she wore a grey Yitty bodysuit. Over top, Lizzo used a viral Nicki Minaj sound that says, “The fact that you would even discuss my looks is insane. I’m a bad b*tch, always been a bad b*tch.” The singer captioned the video: “fine both ways 😮💨.”

This isn’t the first time Lizzo has reflected on her wellbeing over the past few months. In an August Instagram post, she compared a video of herself from 2021 to 2024. In the first clip, she wears a one-piece bodysuit with $100 insignias printed on it; in the second, she confidently models a strappy red swimsuit.

“I wasn’t gonna post this on IG but 2021 me would be soooo proud of 2024 me,” she captioned the post. “And I’m NOT only talking about my body if yall only KNEWWWW what I’ve done for my mental & emotional health in the last year… wheeeew don’t worry imma write a album about it 🤭”

During the same Bali vacation, Lizzo shared that she was “protecting [her] peace” during a “gap year” from the industry. In the clip, she stepped onto a balcony while wearing a black one-piece swimsuit, looking up at the sky as it rains. “I’m taking a gap year & protecting my peace🙏🏾” she wrote.

The posts come amid last year’s bombshell sexual harassment lawsuit filed against Lizzo by three of her former dancers, which is still unresolved. In March, she wrote on Instagram that she was tired of “being the butt of the joke” and wanted to “quit,” but later clarified that she wasn’t leaving music for good.

Basically, there’s a lot happening with Lizzo right now, including her wellness journey. In 2023, she told her followers that while she’s been “taking the physical part [of her career] more seriously” in recent months, she’s “not trying to escape fatness.”

“I’ve always loved moving my body. I’ve always loved working out,” she said in a May 2023 TikTok. “I’m very holistically conscious—like I am very hippie-dippie and woo woo when it comes to food and supplements and just thinking about my body and the environment—and I think a lot of people see a fat person that way and immediately just assume everything they’re doing is to be thin. I’m not tryna be thin. I don’t ever want to be thin.”

Here’s what Lizzo has shared about her weight loss journey.

Lizzo’s ‘slowly’ losing weight thanks to diet changes.

Lizzo told the New York Times that she’s changed her diet, and that’s led to some weight loss. “I’ve been methodical, losing weight very slowly,” she said. But she also recognized that other body positive proponents have gotten public criticism for losing weight. Her take: “My body is nobody’s business.”

Lizzo shared on TikTok back in 2020 that she’s a vegan. She also revealed that she was a vegetarian for seven years before that. And in a 2021 day in the life TikTok, Lizzo shared that she has a protein smoothie that “tastes like ass” in the morning.

She’s focusing on exercise that makes her happy.

Lizzo has always shared snippets on social media of herself doing a range of exercises, including running on the treadmill (while singing!) and Pilates. But she told the Times that she’s currently focusing on workouts that make her feel good. “I’m taking the time every day to put some love into my body,” she said. “There is never a day when I regret taking a walk or doing some Pilates.”

Over time, Lizzo has been getting stronger: In an a video shared to Instagram on August 14, the singer told followers how she’s been toning her arms. In the first clip, Lizzo squats in front of a lat pulldown machine. In the second one, she does the same exercise, but more quickly. “If you’re reading this… remember you can do ANYTHING you put ur mind to!” she captioned the video. “Stay focused, you got this 💪🏾”

Just a few weeks later on August 26, the singer shared a video of herself jumping rope while on a Bali vacation, per People. “Let’s jump rope in Bali,” she said in a video posted to her Instagram stories, before showing a sped-up montage of herself jumping rope on a balcony. “I keep beating my ass…I’m whooping my ass.”

In September, the Michigan native shared a video of her workout routine, using a cable machine, dumbbells, kettlebells, and battle ropes for her arms, before completing burpees with a Bosu ball (which she called “the bane of my existence”) and jumping rope. “Somebody called me skinny on the internet,” she told her followers. “I said, ‘B*tch, where? If anything, I am fhick—fat and thick.'”

Most of all, Lizzo enjoys working out for the mental health benefits. “Once I started working out for mental health—to have balanced mental health or endorphins, so that I don’t look at myself in the mirror and feel ashamed of myself, and feel disgusted with myself. Exercise has helped me shift my mind, not my body,” she told her followers in a May 2023 TikTok. “My body is gonna change, everyone’s bodies change. That’s life.”

Lizzo has slammed Ozempic allegations.

The singer isn’t standing for rumors, either. On September 20, Lizzo brushed off allegations that she was taking the semaglutide Ozempic for weight loss. “When you finally get Ozempic allegations after 5 months of weight training and calorie deficit,” she captioned an Instagram video of herself sighing into the camera.

Lizzo is embracing body neutrality.

In recent months, Lizzo has shared that she’s moving into a more body-neutral mindset. Body neutrality is an approach to body image that encourages people to simply respect their bodies as opposed to forcing positivity about them, according to Hillary Ammon, PsyD, a clinical psychologist at the Center for Anxiety & Women’s Emotional Wellness. “The idea of body positivity, it’s moved away from the antiquated mainstream conception,” the “About Damn Time” singer told The New York Times in March. “It’s evolved into body neutrality.”

Translation? Lizzo is less into trying to love her body every second, and is more just accepting it. “I’m not going to lie and say I love my body every day,” she said. “The bottom line is, the way you feel about your body changes every single day.”

This isn’t the first time the singer has preached this mindset: The “Good As Hell” singer told Vogue in 2020 that it would be “lazy” to label herself as only body-positive. “It’s easy,” she said. “I would like to be body-normative. I want to normalize my body.”

Lizzo’s working on a ‘new me.’

In January, Lizzo shared an IG video of herself looking fit as she modeled her Yitty shapewear. In the clip, she shared that she’s looking to change things up. “New year, new me. You know how they say, ‘Run don’t walk?’ Teleport, bitch,” she joked.

After modeling navy, burgundy and black sports bra and legging sets, Lizzo added, “We’re putting ourselves first this year, you guys. You don’t have to wait to feel like the best version of yourself. New year, new me in my Yitty.”

Lizzo has always accepted fluctuations in her body. “It’s ok to change,” she captioned a 2021 TikTok. “I love every stage my body fluctuates to. The feats your body pulls off every day to function is iconic honestly 💁🏾♀️ love u.” Overall, Lizzo told the Times that she’s just being honest about where she’s at. “There are some days I adore my body, and others when I don’t feel completely positive,” she said.
