Hollywood Legends Speak Out: De Niro and Spike Lee Voice Election Concerns

At the New York premiere of Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis on Monday, legendary actor Robert De Niro and filmmaker Spike Lee expressed their deep concerns about the upcoming presidential election and Donald Trump’s possible victory. During a Q&A session before the screening, De Niro, a long-time critic of Trump, highlighted parallels between the film’s futuristic themes and the current political climate.

“I’m worried,” De Niro admitted, drawing connections between the election and Coppola’s narrative. “It’s not over until it’s over. We need to wholeheartedly defeat Trump and those Republicans – they’re not real Republicans.” Urging everyone to vote, De Niro emphasized the importance of collective action.

He also took a jab at Trump, humorously stating, “Imagine Donald Trump directing this film. It would go nowhere—total chaos. He wants to destroy the country. He couldn’t manage this movie or anything that requires structure.”

Spike Lee echoed De Niro’s sentiment, stressing the urgency of voting: “This election will be close. We can’t think it’s over when it’s not. Register and vote.”

Coppola, joining the conversation, noted that his casting for Megalopolis included performers with differing political views, showing that despite disagreements, unity can prevail on set.
