Johnny Cash will now greet countless visitors to the U.S. Capitol, as congressional leaders unveiled a statue of the iconic musician on Tuesday. The ceremony, attended by Republican and Democratic leaders, as well as members of Cash’s family, attracted a large crowd eager to honor the legendary singer.
The statue marks a significant moment in Capitol history, being the first of a professional musician, a fact highlighted by House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., in his opening speech.
“Johnny Cash perfectly embodies the American spirit,” Johnson said. “He was an everyday man who faced hardship, loss, and triumph, just like many Americans. Cash’s music resonated with people across the nation.”
Johnson explained why Cash, who stands alongside historic trailblazers and presidents, deserves such recognition. “Johnny Cash gave voice to those who were forgotten, whether it was the factory worker, soldiers, or Native Americans,” he said.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., also reflected on Cash’s artistic impact, noting that music has always been an integral part of American culture.
“Johnny Cash transcended genres—country, blues, rock, and gospel—and yet, at every moment, he was distinctly American,” Jeffries remarked. “He was a transformative figure who left an indelible mark on American music and culture.”
