JAY-Z Makes the Call: Why Lil Wayne Wasn’t Chosen for Super Bowl Halftime Show

Lil Wayne recently voiced his disappointment at not being selected as the Super Bowl halftime performer in his hometown of New Orleans, prompting questions about how these decisions are made. Super Bowl halftime producer Jesse Collins clarified on September 16 that JAY-Z has the final say in who headlines the show.

“It’s a decision that Jay makes,” Collins told Variety. “Since we’ve been onboard with that show, he’s made it every year, and it’s been amazing. He’s always picked right.” JAY-Z and Roc Nation partnered with the NFL in 2019 to oversee live music entertainment and aid in social justice initiatives.

This year, Kendrick Lamar was announced as the 2025 Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime show performer, set for February 9 at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. Collins expressed confidence in the choice, stating, “I think we’re going to do an amazing show with Kendrick, and I think everybody’s going to love the halftime show.”

JAY-Z praised Lamar, calling him “a once-in-a-generation artist and performer” whose impact transcends music. Lamar previously performed in the 2022 Super Bowl halftime show alongside Mary J. Blige, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, and 50 Cent.

Lil Wayne responded to the news with an emotional Instagram video, expressing his disappointment. “It hurt a whole lot,” he said, reflecting on the missed opportunity to perform in his city. Despite the setback, he thanked his fans for their unwavering support.
