Kristen Stewart Makes Directorial Debut with The Chronology of Water

Kristen Stewart has officially made her long-awaited leap into directing with her debut feature film, The Chronology of Water. After announcing in early 2024 that she would step away from acting to focus on the project, Stewart has finally brought it to life, with the first image showing her directing Imogen Poots in the lead role.

The film is adapted from Lidia Yuknavitch’s acclaimed 2011 memoir, co-written by Stewart and Andy Mingo. The Chronology of Water tells the deeply personal journey of Lidia, chronicling her tumultuous childhood in the Pacific Northwest, her struggles, relationships, and ultimate triumph in turning trauma into art. The narrative follows her path to becoming a professional writer, as she reclaims her story through the power of her own words.

Described as an unflinching exploration of sexuality, creativity, and the emotional complexities of youth, the film features an ensemble cast, including Thora Birch, Earl Cave, Michael Epp, Susannah Flood, Kim Gordon, and Jim Belushi.

Filmed in Latvia and Malta over six weeks, the production is a collaboration of multiple studios and producers. WME Independent is managing North American sales, while Les Films du Losange handles international distribution.

Stewart’s directorial journey builds on her previous work, including the short films Come Swim, Crickets, and Boygenius – The Film.
