Nicki Minaj and other artists have seemingly taken aim at Jay-Z, co-producer of the Super Bowl halftime show, for selecting Kendrick Lamar as the performer for Super Bowl LIX, set to take place in New Orleans. Many believe Lil Wayne, a New Orleans native, was the obvious choice and blame ongoing rap feuds for the perceived snub.
Kendrick Lamar, who had a public feud with Drake earlier this year, was announced as the halftime performer, sparking backlash. DJ Akademiks voiced his frustration on social media, stating, “The Super Bowl in New Orleans and they let Lamar perform over Lil Wayne… Jay-Z a legendary hater for that.”
Rapper Cam’ron hinted on his podcast that past tensions between Lil Wayne and Jay-Z might have influenced the decision. He suggested the feud, which dates back to Lil Wayne signing Drake to his Young Money label in 2009, played a part: “Lil Wayne had issues with someone who’s involved with running [the Super Bowl]. This is payback.”
Nicki Minaj also weighed in, pointing to Jay-Z’s long-standing rivalry with Birdman, who signed Lil Wayne in 1998. While Jay-Z and Lil Wayne seemingly mended fences in 2015, Minaj implied the feud still lingers, potentially impacting the Super Bowl lineup decision.
