Sigourney Weaver Honored with Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival Opening Night

Sigourney Weaver stole the spotlight on the opening night of the 2024 Venice Film Festival, where she was celebrated with the prestigious Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. The award, recognizing her remarkable 45-year career, was presented just before the world premiere of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

As she accepted the award, the star of Alien, Avatar, and Gorillas in the Mist expressed her disbelief and gratitude. “I’m sure I’m dreaming,” Weaver said. “Thank you for this jet fuel of encouragement.” She humorously added that the Golden Lion would be by her side on the plane, in the gondola, and even in bed with her and her husband.

The ceremony featured a surprise video message from Avatar director James Cameron, who pointed out that Weaver was “way overdue for that Oscar.”

Earlier, during a press conference, Weaver became emotional when a reporter suggested that her portrayal of the iconic character Ripley might have contributed to the rise of female empowerment on screen, potentially influencing Kamala Harris’s journey to becoming U.S. president. Weaver expressed her excitement and gratitude, saying, “To think for one moment that my work would have anything to do with her rise makes me very happy.” She added, “It’s been difficult since 2016, and we’re all very grateful for her.”
