Mindy Kaling Brings Humor and Heart to DNC, Reflects on Kamala Harris Connection

Mindy Kaling, humorously dubbed “the woman who famously outed Kamala Harris as Indian in an Instagram cooking video,” took the stage as the host for the second half of tonight’s DNC event. Known for her quick wit, Kaling kicked off her segment with a series of jokes, playfully referring to herself as an “incredibly famous Gen Z actress” (despite being 45) and joking about her ambitions to become the ambassador to Italy.

Kaling then reminisced about the time she made dosas with Kamala Harris, back when Harris was a senator from California. Their cooking session, which was recorded and went viral, left a lasting impression on Kaling. “What I remember most about the vice president is that Kamala Harris can cook,” Kaling shared. “She gently corrected my sloppiness, complimented me at every step, and made sure my daughter knew what a good cook I am.”

Drawing parallels between their lives, Kaling highlighted the shared experience of being raised by Indian American mothers who immigrated to the U.S. She spoke about how her own mother became an OB-GYN, while Harris’ mother dedicated her career to cancer research.

“After speaking to Kamala, it was clear to me that her mother had passed down the same optimism and fearlessness to her daughter,” Kaling reflected, underscoring the powerful influence of their maternal figures.
