MTV VMAs Rescheduled to Avoid Presidential Debate Clash

Music fans won’t have to choose between their favorite stars and politics this year. MTV has rescheduled the 2024 Video Music Awards, originally set for September 10, to September 11. This change avoids a clash with the first presidential debate of the election cycle between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.

Performers announced for the revamped date include rising stars Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter, along with GloRilla, Camila Cabello, and Rauw Alejandro. This marks the first VMA appearance for Roan and Carpenter, with Roan making her awards show debut. Alejandro and GloRilla are also first-timers, with GloRilla recognized as the “longest-charting female rap hitmaker of 2024.”

MTV’s decision to shift the date wasn’t officially linked to the debate, but the network emphasized its history of promoting civic engagement. They likely wanted to ensure viewers have the opportunity to stay informed about the presidential race without missing out on the star-studded music event.

The rescheduled VMAs now fall on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. MTV plans to honor the day by supporting the nonprofit 9/11 Day and Tuesday’s Children, organizations dedicated to commemorating the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance and supporting affected families.

With this new date, viewers can enjoy the VMAs and still tune into the political landscape, ensuring both entertainment and civic responsibility are front and center.
