Eminem continues to assert his dominance in the rap game with the release of his much-anticipated music video for “Tobey,” which dropped on Monday, July 8. Featuring fellow Detroit natives Big Sean and BabyTron, the track has generated significant buzz since its debut, and fans have eagerly awaited the accompanying visuals.
Directed by the acclaimed Cole Bennett, the video presents an engaging narrative. BabyTron and Big Sean are seen as factory employees on an assembly line, setting the stage before Eminem takes over. Slim Shady appears on the front steps of his childhood home, evoking the iconic cover art of his groundbreaking album, The Marshall Mathers LP. Donning a Jason Voorhees hockey mask, Eminem ends the visual with a dramatic chainsaw sequence, symbolically killing a version of himself to signify the “Death of Slim Shady.”
Originally slated for release on July 5, Eminem delayed the drop for a few days, keeping fans in suspense until after the holiday weekend.
“Tobey” marks Eminem’s first collaboration with BabyTron and his fourth with Big Sean, following their previous hits “No Favors,” “Friday Night Cypher,” and “Detroit Vs. Everybody.” Big Sean reflected on the collaboration as a “full circle moment,” sharing on X that The Slim Shady LP was the first CD he ever bought with his own money.
Eminem’s upcoming album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De GrĂ¢ce), is set for release on July 12. The album was announced with a horror-themed trailer on June 28, further building anticipation. This project follows 2020’s Music to Be Murdered By, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, marking Eminem’s 10th consecutive album to top the chart.
With the lead single “Houdini” already making waves and debuting at No. 2 on the Hot 100, Eminem’s new releases continue to showcase his unparalleled talent and enduring influence in the music industry.
