Pat Sajak, the iconic host of “Wheel of Fortune,” is stepping down after an incredible 40-year tenure. As he enters his final week of shows, Sajak, 77, spoke with his daughter, Maggie Sajak, about his decision to retire. The conversation, aired on “Good Morning America,” offered insights into why now is the perfect time for him to move on.
“I’ve always said this to you, you’ve heard me say this dozens of times, I’d rather leave a couple of years too early than a couple of years too late,” Sajak explained to Maggie. He continued, “Could I still do it? Yeah, I think I could for a while. But there are other things in life that we’d like to do, and I’m enjoying this last year. It’s been a great 40 years, and I’m looking forward to whatever’s ahead.”
Sajak hinted at future possibilities, saying he is content with the idea of enjoying crossword puzzles and spending time with potential future grandchildren, subtly nudging his children Maggie and Patrick, who do not yet have kids of their own.
Reflecting on his final week, Sajak expressed a sense of peace. “Surprisingly OK,” he said. “This was announced a long time ago, almost a year ago, so I’ve had time to sort of get used to it. It’s been a little bit wistful and all that, but I’m enjoying it and taking it in and reflecting on a great run.”
He acknowledged the deep connection “Wheel of Fortune” has forged with its audience over the decades. “I do know that somewhere along the line we became more than a popular show, we became part of the popular culture, and more importantly, we became part of people’s lives. And that’s been awfully gratifying.”
Maggie, who works as a social media correspondent for “Wheel of Fortune,” shared her gratitude. “This show means the world to us,” she said, fighting back tears. “It’s been such a gift. You’ve made what could have just been Hangman into a cultural phenomenon. So thank you for these amazing 40-plus years.”
The heartfelt interview concluded with a hug between father and daughter. Sajak’s final episode is set to air on Friday, June 7, bringing an end to an era that began in September 1983.
In June 2023, Sajak announced his retirement, writing, “Well, the time has come. I’ve decided that our 41st season, which begins in September, will be my last. It’s been a wonderful ride, and I’ll have more to say in the coming months.”
Ryan Seacrest has been named as his successor, although many fans believe the role should have gone to Maggie. Despite the change, Sajak’s legacy as the longest-running host of any game show, surpassing Bob Barker of “The Price Is Right,” will remain unmatched.
