Maya Hawke, the talented star of “Stranger Things” and daughter of renowned actors Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, has openly accepted the label of “nepo baby.” In a recent interview with The Times of London, Hawke discussed her unique path to success in Hollywood, acknowledging the undeniable advantages her famous parents have provided.
Reflecting on whether she truly “deserves” her success, Hawke admitted, “‘Deserves’ is a complicated word. There are so many people who deserve to have this kind of life who don’t, but I think I’m comfortable with not deserving it and doing it anyway. And I know that my not doing it wouldn’t help anyone.”
Hawke, 24, considered changing her name and undergoing cosmetic surgery to avoid the shadow of nepotism but ultimately decided to embrace her lineage. “It’s OK to be made fun of when you’re in rarefied air. It’s a lucky place to be,” she said. “My relationships with my parents are really honest and positive, and that supersedes anything anyone can say about it.”
During the interview, Hawke also clarified comments she made in 2019 about her audition for Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” Initially, she suggested that her role was secured purely through talent. However, she now admits, “I never meant to imply that I didn’t get the part for nepotistic reasons — I think I totally did.”
The discourse around “nepo babies” has intensified, especially following a 2022 New York Magazine article that highlighted the advantages of celebrity family connections. Hawke isn’t alone in addressing the topic. Lily Allen, daughter of British actor Keith Allen, recently expressed similar sentiments, pointing out that her brother, Alfie Allen, doesn’t receive the same scrutiny.
Hawke’s candidness about her Hollywood journey underscores the complexities of navigating an industry where family ties can significantly impact one’s career. Despite the challenges, she remains grateful and grounded, focusing on her craft and the supportive relationships that have helped shape her path.
