Kate Hudson Opens Up About Taking a Year Off Dating on Therapist’s Advice

Kate Hudson recently revealed that she took a year-long hiatus from dating, following her therapist’s recommendation. The 45-year-old actress shared this personal decision on the latest episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast with host Alex Cooper.

“I took a full year off,” Hudson recounted. “I was like, ‘What?’ I couldn’t flirt, no dating, none of it. But it was great.”

Hudson decided to embark on this journey in her thirties, a time when she felt the need to break recurring patterns in her relationships. “I was at that place where I was, like, I don’t wanna keep repeating any patterns anymore. I have a great therapist who was, like, ‘I can help you, but you have to do it,’ ” she explained.

Despite her natural inclination to flirt, Hudson embraced the challenge, even ceasing to give out her number. She described the process as “strangely empowering” but also “very uncomfortable” as it disrupted her usual social dynamics.

“Because we were going through various specific types of therapy, it was really about figuring out certain things that were happening with me,” Hudson shared. “And then I had this one sort of breakthrough that was very emotional that I don’t think I would have been able to access if I had any distraction.”

As time passed, Hudson found clarity and peace in her solitude. “Within six months, I stopped worrying about my phone or who I was going out with. There was no desire for me to be doing anything that had anything to do with potential, you know, flirtation,” she said.

After a year, her therapist gave her the green light to start flirting again. However, Hudson noticed a change in herself; she no longer had the “same attachment” to flirting.

Hudson credits this period of self-discovery and growth with helping her find her now-fiancĂ©, Danny Fujikawa. The couple, who got engaged in 2021, share a daughter, Rani Rose, 5. Hudson is also a mother to sons Ryder Robinson, 20, with ex-husband Chris Robinson, and Bingham “Bing” Bellamy, 12, with former fiancĂ© Matt Bellamy.

Reflecting on the experience, Hudson emphasized the importance of the break in helping her grow personally and find a healthy, lasting relationship.
