The Pittsburgh Pirates are set to introduce a new era of pitching prowess with the major league debut of Paul Skenes, a 21-year-old sensation, this Saturday at PNC Park against the Chicago Cubs. Dubbed the best pitching talent in a generation, Skenes has already made waves in Triple-A, boasting a staggering 1.00 ERA with 45 strikeouts over 27⅓ innings.
Selected first overall in the July 2023 draft by the Pirates, Skenes’ signing bonus of $9.2 million set a record for amateur players. His college career at LSU was nothing short of historic, featuring 209 strikeouts and a 1.69 ERA. Pittsburgh has been cautious with Skenes, limiting his pitch count to build stamina without overburdening him.
At 6-foot-6 and 235 pounds, Skenes is not only the hardest-throwing starter in baseball but also a harbinger of high-velocity pitching. His repertoire includes a blistering four-seam fastball topping 102.1 mph, a unique 95 mph splinker, a sharp slider, a deceptive changeup, and a curve for variety.
Despite their struggles at the plate, the Pirates boast a formidable rotation, especially with the addition of Skenes alongside rookie Jared Jones. Together, they position Pittsburgh as having one of the strongest pitching lineups in the National League Central. This debut could mark a turning point for the Pirates, highlighting their potential to climb the ranks with their dynamic young arms.
