“American Dream: The 21 Savage Story,” an upcoming movie, delves into the life of Atlanta rapper 21 Savage, focusing particularly on his widely publicized 2018 arrest by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In a creative blend of cinema and music, a new trailer, which also serves as a music video for a fresh 21 Savage song, has been released. The trailer features actors Donald Glover and Caleb McLaughlin portraying the rapper at different stages of his life, with Jabari Banks cast as Metro Boomin.
While the film’s release date is yet to be announced, it boasts a star-studded cast including Natasha Lyonne, comedian Druski, Gail Bean, Chad Lindberg, Victoria Pedretti, and Young Mazino. The trailer, directed by the Glover brothers, Jamal Olori, and Fam Udeorji, promises an insightful look into 21 Savage’s journey.
Donald Glover, under his Childish Gambino alias, has collaborated with 21 Savage in the past, notably on “This Is America” and “12.38.” Glover also featured on 21 Savage’s track “Monster” and joined him on stage at Lollapalooza.
The film aims to shed light on the shocking 2018 incident where 21 Savage was detained by ICE, revealing his British origin—a fact previously unknown to many. His lawyer asserted that 21 Savage never concealed his immigration status and criticized the arrest as an attempt to intimidate the rapper. Following his release, 21 Savage spoke out against the U.S. immigration system and has since gained permanent U.S. citizenship and performed in the UK. This film is set to offer a unique perspective on the rapper’s life and the challenges he faced.
