In the midst of the ongoing feud between 50 Cent and Rick Ross, rapper Fabolous has stepped in to provide clarity on the evolving landscape of music sales in the streaming era. His intervention follows 50 Cent’s jibe at Ross’ recent collaborative album with Meek Mill, “Too Good To Be True,” which reportedly sold only 31,009 units in its first week.
Fabolous highlights a crucial aspect often overlooked in the digital age: the significant impact of streaming on sales figures. He explains, “31k in sales is 46,513,000 in streams,” emphasizing the conversion ratio where 1,500 streams equate to a single unit sold. This shift from physical to digital has fundamentally altered how sales are measured and valued.
He further questions the continued focus on low sales numbers, arguing that the majority of music consumption now happens through Digital Service Providers (DSPs). In this scenario, traditional sales metrics become less relevant.
Fabolous clarifies that his opinion is not about taking sides between 50 Cent and Ross but rather addressing the broader conversation around sales and streams. His input not only sheds light on the nuances of music sales in the digital era but also urges a reevaluation of how success in the music industry is quantified today.
