LSU has triumphed in the national championship game, claiming a dominant 102-85 victory over Iowa in Baton Rouge. Jasmine Carson, an unexpected hero and graduate transfer from West Virginia, led the charge with an outstanding first-half display, scoring 21 points while hitting all seven of her field-goal attempts and all five of her 3-point shots. LSU built a significant 17-point lead, which Caitlin Clark and Iowa were unable to overcome despite a spirited fightback in the second half, including a 15-2 run in the third quarter. However, Clark and Monika Czinano’s foul trouble hindered their efforts, and LSU ultimately secured their first-ever national title in women’s basketball.
Coach Kim Mulkey’s already illustrious career received a major boost with this victory. The 60-year-old has now won four national titles, putting her in esteemed company alongside Geno Auriemma and Pat Summitt, and she is the first coach to win the championship with two different programs. This achievement is particularly remarkable given LSU’s 9-13 record in the previous season before Mulkey’s arrival.
