Georgia lawmakers are attempting to push for bills that would allow sports betting and horse racing betting without ever having a state constitutional amendment. They argue that it can become legal under the authority of the state lottery.
Watkinsville Republican Rep. Marcus on Monday introduced House Bill 380, which would include horse racing as a part of sports betting. The bill was sponsored by Sen. Billy Hickman, a Statesboro Republican. It would also authorize three horse racing tracks with betting statewide.
A committee may potentially vote on the house Bill sometime this week. With Senate Economic Development and Tourism Committee Chairman Brandon Beach, promising that a vote will come on the Senate bill next week.
Sports bets are legally being taken in 34 states currently and a feeling that Georgia will approve some sort of sports betting sooner, rather than later is growing.
