The Chicago White Sox agreed to sign free agent starting pitcher Mike Clevinger for a one year deal worth at least $8 million. Clevinger, returned to the Padres last season after missing all of 2021 due to Tommy John surgery. He only appeared in 23 games, 22 were starts, and went 7-7 with a 4.33 ERA, 4.97 FIP and 1,20 WHIP. He struck out 91 and walked 35 in 114 innings.
Prior to the elbow injury and surgery, from 2017-2020, he went 41-20 with a 2.96 ERA (152 ERA+) and 1.15 WHIP with 553 strikeouts in 489 1/3 innings. He also showed short bursts of his old self this season from May 17th to August 1st when he had a 2.81 ERA with 49 strikeouts in 51 1/3 innings.
The White Sox won the AL Central in 2021, and were one of the biggest disappointments in baseball last year with a 81-81 record and missing the playoffs. They now have locked up Dylan Cease, Lance Lynn, Lucas Giolito and Michael Kopech on top of Clevinger for 2023 and are hoping to turn things around.
