Michelle Obama Announces Let Girls Learn Initiative

According to essence.com, First Lady Michelle Obama announced the first leg of her Let Girls Learn Initiative, a program that aims to ensure that girls across the world can have access to a quality education. While speaking in London, Michelle Obama announced that she would be starting a $200 million partnership along with British Prime Minister David Cameron to bring educational opportunities to the 62 million schoolgirls in countries such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo that have been significantly affected by conflict and crisis.

The funds are going to be used to improve the schooling conditions in several countries, enroll girls in schools, and increase parental involvement in their children’s educations. According to a statement made by the White House in March, “When a girl receives a quality education, she is more likely to earn a decent living, raise a healthy, educated family and improved the quality of life for herself, her family and her community.”

The program is planning to be introduced in 11 countries in the upcoming months.
