According to ktla.com, the iconic Hollywood Sign is getting a makeover to celebrate its 100th anniversary. Sherwin-Williams is joining the Hollywood Sign Trust in order to give the 45 foot high sign a cleaning and a brand new paint job. Starting on Monday, September 19th, a crew of 10 workers will prepare, pressure wash, prime, and paint the sign, that was last refurbished back in 2012 by Sherwin Williams. During the time of the makeover, a 24/7 webcam is available on the trust’s website for all. The project will likely take around eight weeks due to each letter being 45 feet high and 31 to 39 feet across.
Although the set up began on Monday, painting preparations won’t take place until between September 26th and September 30th, with priming and painting starting on October third. The makeover should be completed on November first, in time for celebrations next year. According to Jeff Zarrinnam the chair of the Hollywood Sign Trust, “The Sign is the pride of Los Angeles and we are excited for fans all around the world to see this makeover for a very special 100th anniversary, The opportunity to partner again with Sherwin-Williams on this extensive project will help continue the legacy of the Sign, a symbol of a place where magic is possible and where dreams can come true.” Sherwin-Williams added that it will “usher the Hollywood Sign into its next century with High Reflective White SW 7757 in Emerald Exterior premium paint.”
The Hollywood Sign originally read “Hollywoodland” and was used as an advertisement for an upscale real estate development. In 1949, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce shortened the sign to the letters that are seen today.
