Girl Scouts Celebrate The Outdoors

According to cnhinews.com, Girl Scouts from Huntsville, Willis, and the greater Houston Texas area all were able to enjoy a weekend of camping and activities at Huntsville State Park during Girl Scouts Love the State Parks Weekend, from September 9th to September 11th. Every year around this time, Girl Scouts along with their troops, families, and friends celebrate their love for the outdoors via visiting state parks across the country. Girl Scouts are highly encouraged to spend their time outside, enjoy nature and the outdoors, and take time to care for our environment. This year 60 attendees including Girl Scouts and their family members were able to enjoy weekend activities such as bird watching, yoga, hiking, fishing, geocaching, and orienteering. On top of that, the girls helped to clean up the park via picking up trash around the day use area. A demonstration of campfire safety and a program about the alligators in the park.

A highlight included two baby alligators that everyone was able to touch and take pictures with at the end of the program. The Girl Scouts also had a chance to make and exchange something called SWAPS. Swaps stands for Special Whatchamacallits Affectionately Pinned Somewhere.” Swaps are traditionally exchanged with girls from other troops as a token of friendship, the SWAPS are usually made to recognize special events. The SWAPS from this year were made to look like mini sleeping bags and compasses. No Girl Scout camping trip would be complete without a campfire, S’mores, and even a sing along. The girls took turns leading their favorite camp songs, for more information on Girl Scouts of Texas contact Gina Murphy at gmurphy@sjgs.org
