According to hollywoodreporter.com, Irene Papas, the Greek actress and recording artist renowned for her beauty and dramatic performances that earned her prominent roles in Hollywood movies as well as French and Italian cinema roles over the course of six decades, has passed away at the age of 93 years old. Her death was confirmed via The Greek Culture Ministry on Wednesday alongside a statement from Culture Minister Lina Mendoni, “Magnificent, majestic, dynamic, Irene Papas was the personification of Greek beauty on the cinema screen and on the theater stage, an international leading lady who radiated Greekness.” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis described her as a source of “admiration and inspiration” to generations of Greeks.
Papas became known after her performances in The Guns of Navarone in 1961 and Zorba the Greek in 1964. In total Papas starred in more than 50 movies. Greek arts institutions thanked her for her support for younger actors. The Athens-based Greek Film Center described her as, “The greatest Greek international film star, Her image is a timeless imprint of Greek female beauty.”
