Long Shorts are BACK this Summer

If we’re to believe the headlines (and there are many of them), long shorts — Bermudas, jorts, culottes, capris, or whatever you want to call them — are BACK, and they’re the preferred bottoms for the summer.

As Fashionista pointed out, the writing’s been on the wall, arguably, since that Miu Miu collection (the micro mini wasn’t the only breakout): It may have been a slower burn, but the long shorts Miuccia Prada sent down the runway have reawakened the fashion crowd to knee-skimming pants. Brands like Dior and Thom Browne have been putting in the work, too, paving the way for their renaissance and showing all the different sartorial notes you can hit with one silhouette.

Celebrities have confirmed the resurgence. Bella Hadid went with a Y2K-referential patched denim style slung low at the waist. Harper’s Bazaar pointed out that Meghan Markle chose a tailored navy short for lunch with Gloria Steinem. Rina Sawayama wore khaki cargos on stage.

Now, as many point out every time one of these outfits makes the social rounds, this verges on the hold cropped culottes had on us, as a society, in the early 2010s. But the 2022 interpretation offers much more variety in shape, tailoring and length (and price point, as you can see below).

For example, J. Crew offers a 7” Stretch Chino for $60, Re/DONE has “Comfy” cut-off jeans Shorts for $195, Cos has Pleated khaki Bermuda Shorts for $99, Good American has a “Good Icon” Short for $99Athleta offers some “Brooklyn” Bermuda Shorts you can really move in for $69.

If you want major color in your wardrobe, Studio 189 shows off a bold print with Geometric Hand-Batik Bermudas for $180, Banana Republic has a well, banana-colored “Lino” Bermuda Short for $50, KkCo’s Pink “Forage” Shorts are eye catching for $96, but perhaps the pastel waves on the Casablanca “Silk Shorts” would take lounge wear to a new level for $347.

Going somewhere fancy, or maybe fancy wearing fancy shorts?  Alex Mill’s Drill Shorts in Houdstooth could be your answer for $145, or the 3.1 Phillip Lim Knee-Length Tweed Shorts for $550, or perhaps be more subtle with the Dal Linen “Wide Suit” Shorts for $495.
