MacKenzie Scott, who divorced from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in 2019, has just donated $275 million to Planned Parenthood and 21 of its affiliates. This is the largest gift in the organization’s history.
“Only a tiny fraction of global humanitarian assistance today is given directly to local and national organizations,” Scott explained in a recent essay, “and to organizations focused on the disproportionate challenges experienced by women and girls.”
Scott received a 4% stake in Amazon in her divorce settlement and has notably pledged to give away most of her wealth over her lifetime. In 2020, she donated roughly $6 billion across hundreds of nonprofit organizations. This year, she has given away roughly $3.9 billion to a total of 465 nonprofits.
According to Alexis McGill Johnson, Planned Parenthood president and CEO, Scott’s donation will help the organization’s efforts to eliminate racial and structural barriers that Black women experience when seeking sexual health and wellness.
“As always our aim has been to support the needs of underrepresented people from groups of all kinds,” Scott said. “The cause of equity has no sides.”
