Whitney Houston’s unmistakable 1980s style is getting the Barbie treatment as the late superstar becomes the inspiration for her first official doll.
The Barbie Signature Whitney Houston Doll celebrates one of the most recognizable periods of Houston’s career, recreating her appearance from the 1987 music video for “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me).” The collectible arrived around what would have been the singer’s 63rd birthday.
Houston’s Barbie wears a purple tank-style dress and colorful drop earrings, with her big 1980s hair and vibrant makeup completing the look. A microphone stand gives the doll an appropriately performance-ready finishing touch.
The project was created by Mattel in collaboration with Pat Houston, Whitney Houston’s sister-in-law and the executor of her estate.
While the finished doll is new, the idea behind it has been around for much longer.
Discussions about creating a Whitney Houston doll began roughly two decades ago. An earlier concept would have celebrated Houston’s connection to “The Bodyguard,” the blockbuster 1992 film that helped produce one of the most successful soundtrack albums in music history. That version never reached the marketplace during Houston’s lifetime.
The new doll instead turns to another defining chapter in her career.
“I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)” became one of Houston’s signature hits after its release in 1987, and the accompanying video captured the colorful fashion and upbeat energy of the era. Nearly four decades later, that imagery remains closely associated with the singer.
The Barbie arrives during another major celebration of Houston’s catalog. A new collection called “WH1TNEY” gathers all 11 of her Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 singles, offering a reminder of the extraordinary chart run that helped establish her as one of pop music’s defining voices.
Houston died in 2012 at the age of 48, but interest in her career has remained strong. Her recordings continue to reach listeners across generations, while awards, archival projects and other tributes have kept her legacy firmly in the spotlight.
Now that legacy has entered the Barbie world, with one of pop music’s most famous voices immortalized in miniature form.
And naturally, she came dressed to dance with somebody.
