What the Alex Smith Trade Really Means

We’re not sure if you missed it, but Alex Smith was traded to the Redskins earlier this week. This is a huge move for the Redskins and Chiefs for multiple reasons. The Redskins were obviously not in favor of paying Kirk Cousins big money, but they very clearly did not mind paying over $70 million in guaranteed money to Alex Smith.

The Chiefs received a talented young corner in Kendall Fuller as well as a third-round pick while the Redskins received only Cousins. Cousins will now be a free agent and looking for a new team in 2018.

The teams in need of a talented quarterback this season are aplenty with teams like the Jets, Broncos, Bills, Browns, Jaguars, and Arizona all potentially in need of a great quarterback like Cousins. The thing is whoever goes after him will have to pay big money. The highest paid quarterback in the NFL makes over $30 million, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see Cousins in the mid-20 million to $30 million range.
