Have you ever been to a spring event and the crowd erupts into the “Y M C A” song? We all know it was performed by one of the most interesting groups to come out of the disco era, the Village People. In the heat of the disco rage, a French writer and producer by the name of Jacques Morali had written a few dance tunes, but had no band to sing them.
Jacques approached African American singer and struggling actor Victor Willis (he was the Naval officer in the original group) who recorded the songs under the name of “Village People” which was odd because he was the Village People.
The songs took off, and they realized they needed to put together the rest of the ensemble to make it look legit. They created a band of brothers to sing Jacques’s songs, and the rest is musical history. Nearly 20 singers have donned outfits as the ‘VP’ but they’re still performing today.
