Zendaya is known for pulling off some iconic fashion looks – and the London premiere for Dune: Part Two was no different as she shined brightly with her cyborg catsuit couture. All of the Dune costars dazzled at the premiere in varying versions of black, white, and shimmery silver, but Zendaya’s was both shocking and stunning.
As the New York Times reports, the actress wowed fans by wearing a metal armor suit that revealed her booty and chest through shiny see-through plastic cut-outs. Zendaya’s stylist Law Roach confirmed that the original fembot suit was borrowed from the Manfred Thierry Mugler fall 1995 Haute Couture collection.
The bodysuit, which is aptly known as “Machinenmensch” – or Machine Human – took Mugler six months to create at the time, according to W Magazine. Fictional character Futura from Thea von Harbou’s dystopian novel Metropolis is said to be the inspiration behind the design. On the red carpet, Zendaya looked like a futuristic space goddess throwback to Barbarella, who descended just to grace us with her presence for the film.
The futuristic metal looks served as the perfect fit for the premiere of Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi film, set for release in the United States on March 1. The Brooklyn Museum’s “Thierry Mugler: Couturissime” exhibition hails French designer Mugler as one of “most daring and innovative designers of the late 20th century.” The suit is a piece of history and a vision of the future all in one.
While the 90s look did originally include a coordinating headpiece, the 27-year-old opted out of wearing it – perhaps balking at the possibility of disappearing into the outfit – instead opting to have her hair slicked back and accessorized with a diamond necklace.
Following Zendaya’s sci-fi-inspired attire on the sandy carpet, the internet quickly reacted with a number of memes where many have compared the look to Star Wars character C-3PO.
While others pointed out the contrast between her outfit and her co-star Timothee Chalamet’s premiere look (he wore a somewhat casual black oversized T-shirt with silver patterned trousers). Later on, Zendaya changed into something less robotic as she wore a black floor-length Mugler gown as her second look at the London premiere. It was undoubtedly a more comfortable option for sitting through the 2 hour and 46 minute film.
With her upcoming film Challengers and as well as her role as a co-chair at the Met Gala this year, there’s no doubt Zendaya will keep serving with her creative and iconic fashion choices.
