Anna Mae Bullock was born in Nutbush, TN in 1939. Though she began in a stable family, a devastating storm was about to appear. Her parents were share croppers, then military defense workers in the early days of WWI; life seemed pretty normal for Anna Mae.
Suddenly without warning at 11, her mother ran away from home, leaving Anna Mae alone with her abusive father. Anna Mae was devastated, believing her mother didn’t love her. The whole in her heart would allow an abusive husband to continue that cycle of abuse as a grown woman. Anna Mae would eventually leave her abusive husband Ike, only to discover that she was legally responsible for all the expenses incurred while on tour. Again, devastated, Anna Mae worked her way back from financial ruin and followed her dreams.
Anna Mae Bullock is in the Grammy and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and is considered one of the greatest women in music. She has sold over 100 million records, and has survived decades of abuse and doubt. If you haven’t figured it out by now, we’re talking about Tina Turner!
