10 years ago this week (June 19, 2006) we all became witnesses to one of the greatest country and pop songs of our era when Taylor Swift released “Tim McGraw.” The single was her debut single and welcomed us all to her greatness. While she would become a much bigger pop star, she had quite the career as a country singer and had many huge hits in the genre.
“Tim McGraw” was conceived during a freshman high school class when she started humming a melody and thinking about a more than likely possible breakup with her senior boyfriend. He was headed for college and she knew the breakup must happen. Like many artists, Taylor wrote the song to help her go through with this experience.
While it wasn’t her biggest country hit, Taylor’s “Tim McGraw” would end the year as the 59th best US Hot Country Song and would peak at number 40 on the US Billboard Hot 100 throughout the year. Its impact is more with introducing us to Taylor than it is about the greatness of the song itself.
