Earlier in the week we shared the ‘behind the scenes’ details of the Ron Howard “Beatles: 8 Days a Week” smash film that opened in London last week. Paul and Ringo were on hand for the premier, a rousing success. Here are a few things about the Beatles you may not have known…
The first instrument John Lennon learned to play was not the guitar, rather the banjo; bought by his mother Julia in the late 50s when John was still a young boy.
Stu Sutcliffe was a roommate of John’s while attending college, and was the first bass player to be on stage with John. It was Stu that suggested the band change their name to the Beatles inspired by Buddy Holly’s ‘Crickets.’ He left the band in 1961 and sadly died of a brain hemorrhage a few years later at the young age of two.
We all remember the song “Penny Lane,” a street in Liverpool that is still close to Paul. What you may not know is that that neighborhood has always been an area of high crime and it’s still not an area you’d want to visit as a tourist or Beatles fan – just a heads up.
