The Bee Gees were honored in concert at a Grammy related show a few weeks ago, with various contemporary artists singing Bee Gees songs. This wonderful concert made us think of all the great songs used in film. Here’s another installment of great songs of the silver screen.
Mike Nichols produced the 70 classic “The Graduate” using the Simon and Garfunkel songs “The Sound of Silence” and “Mrs. Robinson.” The music made the movie that much better, and propelled Simon and Garfunkel to ultimate stardom.
“Night Fever,” “Staying Alive,” “How Deep is Your Love” and “Staying Alive” were memorable songs heard from the ‘Saturday Night Fever’ movie, again performed by the Bee Gees. Yvonne Elliman and The Trammps also had hits from the film. This movie was a significant moment for Hollywood and disco, and solidified the Bee Gees careers.
In the recent ‘Guardians of the Galaxy II’ there are songs from Fleetwood Mac, Sweet, Sam Cooke, George Harrison and E.L.O. Most of those who have seen the movie will tell you the soundtrack elevates the complete experience.
Hal David and Burt Bacharach wrote the B.J. Thomas’ classic “Raindrops” from the memorable western “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” putting B.J on the map; an early example of the power of using hit music in Hollywood movies.
