Rob Lowe Opens Up About Past with Demi Moore and Teases St. Elmo’s Fire Reunion

Rob Lowe is looking back on his time in the ’80s Brat Pack, particularly his on-screen and brief off-screen romance with Demi Moore. In a recent appearance on Kelly Ripa’s podcast Let’s Talk Off Camera, Lowe, 60, opened up about the chemistry he shared with Moore, 61, during the filming of the 1986 classic About Last Night. The two, both Hollywood darlings of the ’80s, co-starred in the romantic drama about a couple who moves in together after only a few dates.

Recalling his time working with Moore, Lowe described About Last Night as the one film from his ’80s career that he’d highlight. “Of all the stuff I did in the ’80s, if I had to pick one, it would for sure be About Last Night,” Lowe shared. Ripa, a fan of the film, remarked on the palpable chemistry between the two, prompting her to ask if they ever had a real-life romance.

Lowe playfully responded, “I mean, Demi and I briefly — I’m not telling tales out of school — we briefly had a thing,” adding that this occurred before Moore’s engagement to fellow Brat Pack star Emilio Estevez. The couple eventually called off their engagement in 1986.

Lowe, who starred alongside Moore again in St. Elmo’s Fire (1985), also joked about the dynamic among the young cast members, calling it a “big, big sex orgy,” before explaining that hookups were simply inevitable when young, attractive people were working together.

Despite their brief romance, Lowe and Moore have remained friendly over the years. The actor revealed they still text, particularly about the much-discussed sequel to St. Elmo’s Fire. Lowe teased that while the project is moving slower than he’d prefer, it’s progressing, with all the original actors onboard. “It’s moving along… We’re trying to find the right writer and the right story,” Lowe explained, emphasizing the excitement among the cast for the potential reunion.

Lowe believes the film’s themes of friendship and adulthood still resonate today. “Will we ever have the kind of deep friendships coming out of college and coming out of our early 20s? Will that last in our lives?” he pondered. He also suggested that a sequel could explore the challenges of midlife, including divorce and empty nests, adding that “it’s never too late for happiness.”

Lowe ended the conversation expressing his excitement for the potential sequel, hopeful that the project will eventually come to fruition.
