We are nearing the end of National Berry Month (July), but certainly not at the end of Raspberry season, which, depending on where you live, lasts all summer and into the fall. It also seems that the months of July and early August boast a plethora of Raspberry foodie national holidays. July 8 is Raspberry Day, July 31 is Raspberry Cake Day, August 1 is Raspberry Cream Pie Day, August 7 is Raspberry and Cream Day, and August 11 is Raspberry Bombe Day AND Raspberry Tart Day.
Beyond being delicious, Raspberries are jam (see what I did there?) packed with health benefits, and have even been called one of nature’s superfruits. They aid in heart health, cancer prevention, digestion, detoxing, keeping eyes healthy, and, of course, as an antioxidant. They are high in potassium, vitamin C, magnesium, and even protein. Just 1 cup of raspberries has a whopping 8 grams of fiber!
When buying raspberries, choose berries that are dry and plump, and avoid any that look moist or have the beginnings of mold. With this in mind, don’t wash berries until just before eating to prevent mildew from forming.
