Lynyrd Skynyrd has announced its farewell tour, Street Fighters’ scheduled to begin later this year, giving us a chance to share what we think are the best songs from the band…
Could there be a song more identifiable with the band than “Sweet Home Alabama?” The song came from ‘Second Helping’ in 1974 and has sold nearly four million copies. There’s a poke at former Alabama Governor George Wallace and Neil Young in the song, with a special tribute to Muscle Shoals.
“Free Bird” broke all the rules; it was too long for top 40 airplay, yet hit the charts anyway. The song is always dedicated to Duane Allman at their live shows and considered to be the band’s signature song. “Free Bird” reached iconic status after appearing in the soundtracks of the films “Forrest Gump,” “Grand Thief Auto,” “Kingsman: The Secret Service” and countless television shows.
“Call me the Breeze” from the band’s second album ‘Second Helping’ in 1974 proved the boys were more than a one-note band. Eric Clapton liked it so much, he covered with “They Call Me the Breeze” released in 2014.
