Elvis Presley lost his battle with addition at his home on August 16 1977. We’ve been looking back these past weeks considering the man and legacy.
Elvis Aaron Presley was born on January 8th, 1935 to a poor Tupelo, MS family, though his family relocated to Memphis while he was a young teen. In 1954, Elvis made a recording for his mother at Sun Records, which was immediately noticed by Sun Records studio owner Sam Phillips. Elvis jumped in front of that day’s ‘Rock a Billy,’ style with a more hip swinging beat.
His big song, “Heartbreak Hotel,” was written about a local suicide in 1956. Elvis was 24 and Priscilla 14 when they first met. The Elvis Presley estate is worth nearly $300 million dollars, making at least $55 million dollars each year.
Elvis won three Grammys and earned a Lifetime Achieve Award and is in many Hall of Fames.
