Is your patio more a place for relaxing in relative solitude or are you more inclined toward big, social gatherings with food and entertainment? These are key factors in setting up your patio area, as you make choices regarding high-ticket furniture items like couches, chairs and tables.
Southern California-based blogger Dinah Wulf, founder of the website DIY Inspired, says whatever your preferences, bringing the indoors outside is her top piece of advice. “We put a lot of effort to make our homes not only beautiful, but comfortable and functional,” Wulf says. “The same goes for outdoor spaces. Bring out items such as throws for cool nights, pillows for comfort, and vases with flowers or succulents for décor.”
As for her must-have in a patio area, Wulf incorporates another element found indoors—a rug. “An outdoor rug is a guide for arranging comfortable and inviting seating,” Wulf said. “It allows you to bring color and pattern to your outdoor space. It also protects your bare feet from the cold concrete, allowing you to take off your shoes and truly sit down and relax.”
